One of the world’s largest international cargo airlines wanted to maximize technology investments and streamline pilot workflow by creating a fully paperless cockpit. In addition, they wanted new tools for technicians to increase speed and effectiveness of aircraft maintenance activities, including using AI to drive actions to minimize aircraft downtime. The company also wanted to use technology and better employee apps to attract new talent.
How Lextech Helped
Uniting flight operations leaders, IT, technicians and pilots, Lextech facilitated development of a strategic future vision and success metrics to track progress.
To understand the path forward, Lextech conducted extensive user experience research to clarify current workflows, technology interactions and barriers to performance. Out of subsequent solution workshops emerged a shared vision for the future and a prioritized roadmap to get there.
Lextech worked closely with flight operations and IT to architect the technical infrastructure needed to support the roadmap. Unlike existing siloed tools, the team implemented solutions to manage mobile challenges such as connectivity awareness, limited bandwidth, offline operation, as well as integrating 19 disparate systems—the first time more than 10 systems were integrated to drive a single app.
Lextech and end-user representatives collaboratively defined experiences to address top mobile opportunities and vetted rapid-design prototypes with stakeholders. Lextech then developed MVP versions for deployment, and delivered regular product updates.
Results
Each solution was instrumented to capture operational metrics so the airline could gauge effectiveness, make adjustments and iterate toward the program vision. This rich data empowered product owners to make insightful, data-based decisions.
As one key stakeholder noted, "The ability to consolidate required flight information from multiple sources into a single location … is a game changer. It allows the pilot to focus on the most important information and accomplish their work in a time-efficient manner."
Successful solution deployments earned a “Hall of Fame” award based on speed to value, reliability and security criteria. The solution was the “foundation for the app ecosystem strategy… Pilots are now better able to access and consume data needed to make critical decisions prior to and during” aircraft operation.
